Lectures/Workshops

TRUNK SHOW LECTURE: An ever changing show of quilts and garments that I have created. It also shows the evolution and development of my art from my "weaving days" to the non-traditional piecing and quilting that I do today. I will talk about how I became a textile artist, how my creative ideas evolve, and what inspires me. My process of construction and design will be included.

IMPROVISATIONAL PIECING LECTURE: Examples of improvisational piecing in both quilts and wearables is shown and discussed. This includes a demonstration of free hand cutting and piecing with the rotary cutter and sewing machine.

WORKSHOPS

CREATE YOUR OWN BLOCK: Start by creating a simple design on a four inch square of paper. Enlarge it, intersect with more lines as needed to make a well balanced design for a contemporary quilt block. This was the technique I used to created "Road to the Sun" which won a blue ribbon at the NQA Paducah show in 1997. A copy machine must be available.

MATERIALS: Paper, pen, pencil, ruler, scotch tape, and scissors.

Half day or whole day.

IMPROVISATIONAL QUILT DESIGNING: Throw away your rulers and templates. This is a spontaneous and intutive method of cutting and piecing fabric to make quilts that are totally personal and original. At least three techniques are explored.

MATERIALS: Sewing machine (non Featherweight prefered), cutting mat, rotary cutter, basic sewing supples, and many fat quarters of various colors and designs.

One day or two days.

FLORAL FANTASY : Create an art quilt by translating your own photograph or clipped picture to fabric. Design and materials used to make this transition will be the major focus.

MATERIALS: photographs, paper, pencil, sewing machine (non Featherweight prefered), fabric, threads, basic sewing supplies, interfacing, other embellishments

One day or two days.

MIXED MEDIA FABRIC COLLAGE : Wall quilts don't need to be washed; therefore we are open to a much wider source of materials. Pictures can be printed on fabric as a jumping off point. There is no limit to your imagination.

MATERIALS: Fabric scraps, pictures, artificial flowers, beads, charms, text. Sewing machine (non Featherweight prefered), basic sewing supplies, double sided fusible.

One day or two days.
