TRUNK SHOW LECTURE: An ever changing show of quilts and garments that I have created. It shows the evolution and development of my art from my “weaving days” to the non traditional piecing and quilting that I do today. I will talk about how I became a textile artist, how my creative ideas evolve, and what inspires me. My process of construction and design will be included.
IMPROVISATIONAL PIECING LECTURE: Examples of improvisational piecing in both quilts and wearables are shown and discussed. This includes a demonstration of free hand cutting and piecing with the rotary cutter and sewing machine.
CREATE YOUR OWN BLOCK WORKSHOP: Start by creating a simple design on a four inch square of paper. Enlarge it, intersect with more lines as needed to make a well balanced design for a contemporary quilt block. This was the technique that I used to create “Road to the Sun”, a blue ribbon winner at the NQA Paducah show in 1997. A copy machine must be available.
MATERIALS: Paper, pen,, pencil, ruler, scotch tape, and scissors Half day or whole day.
IMPROVISATIONAL QUILT DESIGNING: Throw away your rulers and templates. This is a spontaneous and intuitive method of cutting and piecing fabric to make quilts that are totally personal and original. At least three techniques are explored.
MATERIALS: Sewing machine ( non Featherweight preferred), cutting mat, rotary cutter, basic sewing supplies, and many fat quarters of various colors and designs. One day or two days.
FLORAL FANTASY: Create an art quilt by translating your own photograph or clipped picture to fabric. Design, materials. and embellishments used to make this transition will be the major focus.
MATERIALS: photographs, paper, pencil, sewing machine with zig-zag, basic sewing supplies, double sided fusible, fusible interfacing. One day or two days.
